My kids love domestic help. We don’t employ one at home but all my sisters ( three of them) do. And every Sunday when we all return to my mom’s place, she will have three domestic help in her house. My kids will call them affectionately when we arrive at the house and their favourite is Auntie Lynn.. Kyla will look for her to play with them. Auntie Lynn is the only choice for Ariel if she wants someone to feed her at meal times. And when one of them was returning to Indonesia after a two years contract, my gals were so sad and pleaded her to stay on.. When she left, Ariel promised to visit her in Indonesia when she grows up.
And one day, Ariel announced that she wants to be a maid when she grows up! Huh?!!
“Why?”, I asked.
“Because I like to look after babies and children, just like Auntie Lynn.” she replied.
“Ok, but you may want to consider being a teacher too because you can take care of young children as well,” I tried to encourage her to think of “higher” professions.
“Can I be a security guard like Auntie Annie who opens the school gate for us every evening?” asked Ariel again.
“Well, you can if you want, but why do you want to be a security guard?” I replied.
“Because she looks so cool and powerful with that walkie talkie!” Ariel said.
“And I want to be cleaner uncle whom we meet every morning on our way to school!” quipped Elkan!
Sign! I know I am snobbish, but I don’t think any parents would wish for their kids to grow up to be a maid or cleaner or security guard. I know I don’t. I was hoping to hear professions like doctor, engineers, policeman, etc…
They are still too young to decide or know what they want to be when they grow up. But am I prepared to accept whatever choices they make next time? Will I always think that I will know what is best for them as I am the mother and much older? I really do not know. I sincerely pray that I will be ready to accept whatever career choices that God have in plan for them!
